KEGOC completes construction of the second phase of the North-East-South energy transit project

KEGOC completed the project for construction of a 500 kV line Shulbinskaya HPP (Semipalatinsk)–Aktogay–Taldykorgan–Alma, which was carried out in 2016–2018, the Interfax-Kazakhstan agency reported. President Nazarbayev, December, 11, in Astana, during a teleconference within the framework of the Day of Industrialisation, launched the project.

"This is a project that we have long dreamed of, called to provide Taldykorgan and Almaty with electricity through East Kazakhstan. When there was none, Taldykorgan and Almaty were on the frontier of electricity supply, enterprises were not created, there were no conditions. Now, for the first time, the entire region is provided with electricity" Nazarbayev noted.

As indicated in the reference materials, the annual projected production of electricity will be 78.2 million kWh. KEGOC has been implementing a high-voltage line construction project for the project to expand the transit of electricity from surplus north to south and east of Kazakhstan (the North-East-South energy transit project) since 2012, its cost is 96.4 billion tenge. The total length of the 500 kV lines is 883 km.

The project is divided into two phases. The first stage is the construction of a transmission line Ekibastuz-Shulbinsk HPP (Semipalatinsk)-Ust-Kamenogorsk. The second stage is the construction of the line Shulbinsk HPP (Semipalatinsk-Aktogay-Taldykorgan-Alma substation. It was reported that the project will increase the transmission capacity of networks and the transit potential of the national grid in the direction of north to south of Kazakhstan, ensure coverage of the electricity needs of electrified sections of railways, energy consumption their object the mining industry, to create conditions for the development of border areas and renewable energy sources, to strengthen the link with the Eastern Zone. KEGOC functions as System Operator of the Unified Power System of Kazakhstan.
